Why Does Coaching Work?

Life coaching has been around for almost 20 years now and it has become increasingly popular during the past 10 years. In the workplace, coaching is almost commonplace - 80% of FTSE top 100 companies now use coaching.

Coaching is an client centered interactive, future- focused, non directive process where the coach guides and facilitates your progress towards defined goals. Sounds good, but what does that mean...
For me, there are 4 key words to use when describing how coaching works
Awareness - Sometimes we don't know what we don't know, and can't see the wood for the trees. A coach can enable you to gain new insights about yourself.

Focus - We often don't take time and space to think nowadays, and reflect on what is really important. Even if we do, we still aren't able to do it objectively and it can get a bit muddled. A coach help you set out your thoughts, priorities and ideas clearly and logically so the mist lifts!

Responsibility - Realising that we have huge amounts of choice can be massively empowering or paralysing! But ultimately we are the person who needs to take charge and make things happen for ourselves. A coach can enable you to realise where you need to take responsibility for own your behaviours and outcomes.

Commitment - Talking about stuff is all well and good, but actually taking action is where the real benefit happens, so coaching is always about agreeing actions and commitments to change.
So what is the role of the coach?

A coach helps their client to identify what they want to achieve. Once identified, the coach supports their client throughout their quest to achieve their goals, helping to keep the client focused and on track and to overcome any challenges and obstacles on the way to their goal. Often providing insights, and techniques for you to overcome obstacles and interference, or just enbaling you to reduce the gap between thinking and doing

Also it is not necessarily that the life coach is smarter than you or knows more than you, but it is a way to focus on what you want your life to be, so you come up with a plan on how to get there with the support and motivation from an outside, objective person. Coaching is largely non directive, enabling you to gain responsibilty and commitment, and I am not going to - 'tell' you the answer....

However on some of the tools I use, there is an element of me demonstrating a way of doing something to you that can choose to experiment and engage with, if you choose.
